Shut off electricity and gas

Safety Precautions

If your basement has flooded, do not attempt to enter unless it is safe to do so. Standing water can conduct electricity, and there may be downed power lines or gas leaks.

Before entering the basement, turn off the electricity and gas supply to the entire house or apartment. This will help prevent electrocution or explosions.

Electricity

  • Locate the main electrical panel, typically located in the basement or garage.
  • Turn off the main breaker by flipping it to the “OFF” position.
  • If you cannot reach the main panel, contact your local utility company for assistance.

Gas

  • Locate the gas meter, typically located outside near the foundation of the house.
  • Turn off the gas by closing the valve that is located next to the meter.
  • If you smell gas, leave the house immediately and call 911.
